In 2017, nearly 60% of adults in sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash.
We're solving this by building financial services that just work: no account fees, instantly available, and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always work, you can still send money with Wave. In November 2017, we launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments. In 2019, we expanded to Cote d'Ivoire. Now, we're enabling millions of users and growing fast. Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent. And that's where you come in....
How you'll help us achieve it
We’re forming a telephony integrations team to ensure reliable and cost-effective SMS and Voice (SIP) services in each of our markets. These services are essential for providing great customer service, secure identity verification (2FA) and pro-active communication to our millions of users. We’re looking for someone with telecom/partnership experience to lead this team.
You’ll be responsible for:
- Owning our companywide cost and reliability metrics for Voice and SMS
- Strengthening relationships with the telecom operators and aggregators in both existing and new markets
- Leading a team of engineers and operations staff to ensure high reliability and swift response during downtime.
- Working closely together with local BizDev teams to continuously renegotiate telco integration prices and terms
- Deeply understanding our telephony needs from first principles and building solutions that just work.
You might be a good fit if you
- Have experience navigating a telecom or similar organization and getting things done
- Bonus if you have worked for a telecom before dealing with Voice or SMS products.
- Can handle both fast and slow moving environments and facilitate collaboration between the two.
- Communicate effectively and often, both in writing and in-person, to the point of over-communication.
- Like finding creative solutions to external obstacles and are persistent in getting what we need.
- Have a basic understanding of SIP/SMS technologies or are very eager to learn
- Are excited about working remotely and have the skills and self discipline to do so effectively.
- Are equally excited and able to travel for in-person meetings when the situation requires it
- Excel at cross-cultural communication and proficient in both French and English
- Location: Remote
- You can work remotely from anywhere (between UTC -5 and +4) with reliable Internet access.
- Every two to four months, our remote team meets in Africa for a one-week retreat. (Wave covers all costs.)
- Salary: Our salaries are competitive and are calculated using a transparent formula. For this role, we are offering a salary range of 96,000-120,000 USD depending on work experience and location based, plus equity
