When running the Enroll/Update Fingerprint wizard, if you receive the following message:
"Upek Failure - Upek failed to start: vtinitialize failure ... Do you want to retry?"

 

Follow these steps to correct:

After Microsoft Update runs, it installs an optional hardware update for the SmartCard Reader that comes built into the Dell Latitude laptops. You have two options to correct this:

Option 1:

  1. Go to the Device Manager and expand the Biometric and double-click on the TouchChip Fingerprint Coprocessor device
  2. Go to Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver
  3. Restart computer

Option 2:

  1. Using the Internet Explorer, go to http://support.dell.com/support.
  2. Under Select a Product, either enter the Service Tag of your computer or the Product Model, then go to Select a Tool and choose Drivers & Downloads. Click on Go .
  3. Select the Operating System of your computer (i.e. Microsoft Windows XP). Click on Find Downloads ).
  4. Expand on Chipset. Choose the option SmartCard Controller . Download and install.
  5. Restart your computer.
After the updated driver has been installed, you will be able to use the Upek device without any problems.
